Gadget Guy

One day when driving in the car I asked my 3 year old what his favorite store was. He replied with a laugh “Chuck E. Cheese.” He then asked me what my favorite store was. I had to think about that for a few seconds but the answer came pretty easily in the end… Best Buy. So now when we are talking about my birthday or Father’s Day and my wife asks my son where they are going to buy my gift, he says “Best Buy!”

I guess with my 3 year old knowing my shopping preferences, it really says a lot about how much of a gadget guy I have become and what I enjoy looking at and staying up to date with. I am just glad that I have never received the stereotypical Father's Day gifts like ties or cologne. My gifts lately have been portable GPS, heart rate monitors, iPods, helmet cams and camcorders.

My favorite columns in Men's Health and Triathlete Magazine are the gear guides that discuss the newest gadgets and tools for the outdoor enthusiast. Whether it's the latest heart rate monitor/GPS (isn't the new Garmin 405 sweet? Too bad it isn't water resistant), or mobile phone (I love my Samsung Black Jack II) or helmet cams, I really love to experiment and get the latest products.

Now that I pride myself on staying up to date with the latest in technology, my wife is getting some of the benefits of my knowledge as well. However, I am not too sure that she enjoys my almost-daily updates about the latest gadget that I found in the Sky Mall catalog or in Outside Magazine.

She learned the hard way about telling me of any new gadgets that she thinks that I would like to know about. Last year she saw a 12-foot inflatable movie screen that's used for watching movies outdoors. Well, let's just say that a few days after she told me about it I found it online and ordered one and then put together a total outdoor movie set up, complete with DLP projector and sound system.

After talking with a few of my friends about my interest in the latest gadgets I soon found out that it's not just me. One of my friends is always purchasing the latest in technology which has made for a steady stream of lightly-used electronics for purchase, as he goes from one model or brand to the next. So his need to have the latest and greatest has really benefited me and others that know him.

I am not sure if I could call my interest in the latest and greatest technology an obsession but it's definitely something that keeps me on the cutting edge of gear. One thing that I do know for certain is that I have a hard time going into Best Buy without coming out with a lighter wallet. I have even started to buy electronics that I think my wife will like when I don't really need anything.

If you know of any new products or gear you think that Competitor Texas readers would like to know about we would love to learn more about it. We try to keep you, the reader, up to date on the newest active lifestyle products on the market. You never know, you might just make my daily update to my wife!
